Texting Craze Gone Crazy?

Filed under: Cedar Hill,DeSoto,Duncanville,Grand Prairie,Lancaster,Uncategorized — duncanvilleeditor @ 8:42 pm

Texting and e-mail have become the new way to communicate, and for some the only method of communication. Instead of seeing a group of friends waking around the mall gabbing with one another, nowadays, it’s more common to see the same group sitting in the food court with their faces glued to their high-tech cell phones, speaking in their own language.

What’s all this then?

Industry leaders much smarter than I are predicting the end of “paper” in newspapers within ten years. Many media companies are already heading in that direction with advances in online offerings on many fronts and in multiple formats. News agencies are now media agencies and, before long, that long-favored descriptor for old-school journalists – “He has ink flowing in his veins” – will fade from our vocabulary just as we no longer fill up with “high-test.”
In the meantime, here at Today Newspapers we really can’t say what the future holds other than this industry is faced with all sorts of challenges from all different sides but still facing a common dilemma – delivering community news you want. (more…)

What stores and restaurants do you want here?

May 29, I will have a column in the various issues of Today Newspapers about getting more stores and restaurants, i.e., “north of the Trinity” type stores, to our area, complete with webmail and e-mail contacts for how to reach these folks and tell them they need to come here.

Well, this blog post is your chance to play along.

I and other Today editorial staff brainstormed the stores and restaurants we could think of, but our list certainly wasn’t exhaustive.

We’d like to hear from you, too, and let you start the game now.

If you have a favorite store or restaurant that we don’t yet have in our area, please list it here. If you have a webmail or e-mail contact for that company, please include that.

That May 29 column is here.

More than bluebonnets in Texas spring

Texas is renowned for its bluebonnets in April, along with other wildflowers. But, that’s not the only thing blooming this time of year.

This is a red oak, caught at just the right time of starting to put on leaves on this particular branch. This is in Windmill Hill Nature Preserve in DeSoto.

Red oak leaves start the year red too

There’s plenty of free nature to see in the area this spring. Of course there’s the bluebonnets and other wildflowers on the shoulders of I-20, I-35 and U.S. 67. There’s also trees like this in Dallas County parks in Lancaster and Cedar Hill as well as DeSoto, and city parks in those cities plus Duncanville and Grand Prairie.

Dallas No. 1 in growth

The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex added 162,000 residents from July 2006-July 2007, making it the biggest growing metropolitan area, in terms of numbers, in the nation.

With Houston No. 4 and San Antonio and Austin both in the Top 10, Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst was right yesterday, it would seem, when he predicted a doubling of the state’s population to 45 million in 30 years.

Now, how much of this growth comes to our Best Southwest and Grand Prairie area, and what it means for state highway infrastructure that Dewhurst mentioned, local amenities like possible city-sponsored Wi-Fi in Cedar Hill and more, remains to be seen.

I love the spring …

No not because of the flowers or love is the air. March Madness is what gets me. I got my bracket all set and ready last Wednesday night. My final four was picked and I was ready for the big dance.

Only sad part is half of my pre-picked final four is out. I just knew Duke was going to at least make it to the Elite Eight, but Coach K and the boys didn’t even get to see the Sweet Sixteen. Sad days.

This tournament has had some unexpected twists and turns. After just this first weekend. I’m completely clueless as to who is going to win. For the record. I changed up my bracket include UNC, Kansas, Texas and West Virginia.  We’ll see …
